Real Buttermilk Ranch Dressing
Put that Ranch on everything! Well, at least that’s what I’ve learned that my wife really enjoys doing, especially on pizza crusts. Therefor, we started buying a lot more Ranch than I was used to having around before marriage. But the number one thing that bothered me about store bought stuff was all of the “extra” ingredients that sauces had, with Ranch being at the top of the list. It has dairy, but it somehow stays on the shelf for months?
That can’t be good.
If you turn the back of the label – these are the kinds of ingredients that you see:
The first part is essentially mayonnaise (this brand uses Soybean oil… I’d look for corn or canola oil in my mayo instead)… the rest consists of preservatives, stabilizers with a dash of herbs and spices. Not exactly homemade, ya dig? There had to be a better way. Buttermilk was a big issue at first. I didn’t like buying buttermilk just to wait for when I am in the mood to make Ranch (or really good fried chicken) or worse, watch it go to waste. Then I discovered dried buttermilk, which was the breakthrough I needed. Now we make our own Ranch (to order!) and you’d be surprised how easy it is making it with stuff you probably already have in the fridge.
- One mixing bowl
- Spoon or a small whisk (like this one)
- Mayonnaise or Aioli, 1/2 Cup (Here’s my recipe for Mayo too!)
- Sour Cream, 1/2 Cup
- Dried Butter Milk, 1/2 teaspoon (Order Here)
- Dried Dill, 2 heaping teaspoons
- Dried Parsley, 2 heaping teaspoons
- Dried Garlic, 1/2 teaspoon
- Black Pepper, 1/2 teaspoon
- Sea Salt, 1/2 teaspoon
Combine all ingredients in the mixing bowl, serve immediately. Can keep in fridge for 5-7 days. Makes one cup.
